I am like Wiseman in that, i played a FPS (Quake as well) solidly for a few days, and then grew tired of it and my interest withdrew from any FPS. They are all the same essentialy, bar a few different modes. But my interest in FPS's was revived when i got Halo. Sure, i'd skeptically played it a few times before, and wasnt really fussed, but when i got it with the X-box, i was impressed that a FPS such as this could prove itself to be even remotely fun.

Ironically, the only reason this is the best FPS out there is due to the fact that the things which make the game fun and original arent from a first person view at all. All the vehicle elements of the gameplay are seen from afar, in a third person view. Thats the main thing this game has going for it (aside from the above average story and well designed co-op). The reason fans are raving about it is because it has opened itself up to a vast array of possibilities in making itself less like an FPS.

Where can it go? Think along the lines of an MMOFPS, where instead of 2v2, 4v4 or even 8v8, you can play out a full scale war of possibly 30 or 40 people.
Sharing warthogs (land vehicles) scorpions (tanks), banshees (aircrafts) and ghosts (hovercrafts) with other people on your team to form small armies, devising strategies (saving vehicles for last, diversions, early air strikes...the possiblities are endless) and many other ideas could be incorporated to simulate a real-time FPS battle, all on the beautiful world of Halo.

There could be a timer on how quickly vehicles are produced (along the lines of an RTS), so as to disallow people from having the banshees or scorpions at the start, and it would be their choice whether to send it out and risk getting it destroyed, or to wait for a few more to be produced, and just remain defensive until an theres adequate number for the whole team to strike with at once. Basically, it'll combine RTS with FPS to form something brand new and far more strategic.

Its all just speculation, but technically in the long term Bungie are on to something with what they have. Of course, people should always be allowed to play Halo the normal way, as a standard FPS with just up to 8 players or so, but if they enabled such options as stated before, we'll have something far more enjoyable with a greater long-term appeal.
And naturally, such options would require an extremely advanced graphics engine (something that even the X-box Next will probably fail to provide). All eyes on the PC.

Basically what im saying is (with a lot of deviation), the original Halo is great, but a tad overrated, if only because fans are excited about what can be done with the gameplay conventions in the future. Right now, im enjoying the original, and really looking forward to the sequel, but they dont have anything over a good RPG. *Points to sig*

I like UT2k4 better than Halo, cause it has vehicles that Halo has, more modes, faster paced gameplay, and the great customization. And I'm not starting an argument, so don't think about it OCB.

Has anyone heard of the latin saying "De gustibus non est disputandum"?

It means "Theres no arguing about tastes". Now thats a phrase that your average gamefaq'er could learn from!
Anyway ive yet to play UT2K4. And yeah, I have to admit there isnt that much customisation in halo when it comes down to it, but im expecting this problem to be corrected in the sequel. The UT series has had ample time to improve itself, but Halo is Bungie's first FPS offering, so i guess its to be expected.

And also, back on topic, we need someone else to conform to our Xeno avatar theme here!! I mean come on, surely someone here wants to be Chu-Chu...

Cat you don't mind if I disect your post to inform you a little bit more about Halo do you?

Here it goes:

Ironically, the only reason this is the best FPS out there is due to the fact that the things which make the game fun and original arent from a first person view at all. All the vehicle elements of the gameplay are seen from afar, in a third person view. Thats the main thing this game has going for it (aside from the above average story and well designed co-op). The reason fans are raving about it is because it has opened itself up to a vast array of possibilities in making itself less like an FPS.

There are a few things that are different in first person, such as carrying only two weapons, and a few other minute things. The vehicles make it really revolutionary like you said. The story is what is really good. If you read The Fall of Reach, it has a great back story. After that read The Flood for more information on Halo, itself and the marines that landed there. Then finally read First Strike (the best IMO) it fills the gap between Halo and Halo 2.

Where can it go? Think along the lines of an MMOFPS, where instead of 2v2, 4v4 or even 8v8, you can play out a full scale war of possibly 30 or 40 people.

It is rumored they are planning something like that for Halo 2.

Nice idea, but then it might seem too much like Freedom Fighters (3rd person shooter, VERY good). Did you know when they first started making Halo it was a RTS then a 3rd person RTS/Shooter in third-person, then finally a FPS.

I think they'll keep the Halo series a FPS, which might be for the best. You can already have 8vs8 you know.

----

I made an official Halo topic for more discussion awhile ago, probably on page 2 for further discussion of the storyline and what the future holds and even present and past stuff.
